(Staff photo) Open Horse Show Is Back At State Fair An open horse show as a feat ured event of the North Carolina State Fair is being made a part of the daily program of free ev ents for the 100th Fair which runs the week of October 9-14. Since the first State Fair was held in 1853, horse events have been a feature of the Fair’s Pro gram. Harness racing, which without pari-mutuel betting, has failed to draw in recent years, was dropped from the program last year. An RCA Rodeo was added several years ago as an exciting entertainment which has proved very popular here. A one day pony show will be con tinued as a part of the new pro gram. The last major shows of horses were held in 1925 and 1926 while Mrs. George W. Van derbilt was president of the state’s Agricultural Society which owned and operated State Fair from 1853 through 1936. This year, halter classes for registered stock will be shown each morning, beginning at 8:30. During the afternoon the per formance classes will be jud ged. The following schedule will be followed: Monday, Oct.9, American Saddlebreds and Ten nessee Walkers; Tuesday, Ara bians, Half-Arabs and Morgans; The number of veterans in civil life increased by 271,000 during the past year to a total of 25,846,000, the Veterans Ad ministration reports. Wednesday, Thoroughbreds and Hunters; Thursday, Ponies Shetlands and Welsh; Friday, Quarter Horses and Appalo osas; Saturday, Youth Fitting and Showmanship and Perfor mance show with major em phasis on rider rather than mount. With each class filled there will be 14 halter classes in the nine breeds or groups working for three money awards and five ribbons. “Learning ] Berea, Ky.—“Learning by Doing” is the emphasis in Berea this week for about25enrol!ees in the Workshop in Community Action sponsored by the Council of the Southern Mountains. By Doing” Theme Of CSM Workshop Held At by-step process at community action. This process may cover a two-year time span when they duplicate it in their home com munities. The trainees were separated into four groups, each of which visited a different community or hollow. Each group had a CSM staff member as leader and was accompanied by a community leader, a person who lives in the area they visited. This leader oriented them to the community. In moving through the com munity action process, they were to talk with poor people, learn their problems, identify a common problem and decide how the community might solve the problem. They also were to observe several projects, such as community centers, that represent the final step of the process. Back in Berea, the partici pants will relate their field ex perience to three specific pro jects, discussing how thesermay be developed through the com-' munity action process. These projects will be manpower pro grams, legal services for the poor, and organization of an ef fective board of directors. ■i»nmW :: 7M ,»y, yi $43 .III 5 BIG DAYS!
